Bassekou Kouyate is a musician from Mali, his band is known as Ngoni Ba. The first African tribal music, which evolved from slave songs to blues.
He was born into the Kouyate family in Garana, Barouéli Cercle. At the age of 12, he started playing the Ngoni. In the late 1980s he moved to the capital, Bamako. Kouyate's debut album, Segu Blue, was released internationally in 2007 by Outhere Records and distributed in the UK by Proper Music Distribution. He has also appeared on a number of albums by Toumani Diabaté and has performed in several European countries. In 2010, Kouyaté toured with Béla Fleck.
He is one of the true masters of the Ngoni, an ancient traditional lute found throughout West Africa. He is a virtuoso, innovator, stronghold of tradition all at the same time. He has collaborated with many musicians in and outside of Mali. Bassekou shared the stages with the likes of Youssou N‘Dour, Ali Farka Toure, Bela Fleck, The Kronos Quartet, Taj Mahal, Eliades Ochoa, Damon Albarn, Michael League… He was Grammy nominated for the follow up ‘I speak fula’ (Outhere Records) and played hundreds of concerts all over the globe, sharing the stage with musicians from Paul McCartney to John Paul Jones, Bono & many many others.
